5 Things That You Should Do Before Winter Sets In

Fall is a great time to catch up on those home maintenance projects that you’ve been putting off in the summer. Here are some tips to get you started!

1. Prepare Your Pipes

It’s important to prepare your pipes, otherwise, they can burst. After all, they’re sensitive to temperature changes.

What should you do? Turn off the water for all outside faucets. In addition to that, you want to drain all of the water from the pipes. The last thing that you want is for it to freeze!

2. Clear Your Gutters

Clear your gutters to remove twigs, leaves, and other gunk. They shouldn’t be sagging and trapping water—that can easily lead to leaks, which can lead to expensive repairs.

Any worn or damaged gutters should also be replaced—you don’t want to have to deal with any leaks during the winter.

3. Check Your Roof

Inspect your roof. See if there are any buckled, or missing shingles—use a pair of binoculars if you have to. Depending on where you live, there might also be cracks due to hail damage.

In cases like that, you’ll want to get them replaced as soon as possible.

4. Prune Your Plants

Late fall is the best time to prune trees. Generally speaking, you want the branches and limbs to be at least 3 feet from your house.

That way, even if there are high winds, they won’t damage your home. Don’t forget to rake and sweep up the leaves from your lawn as well.

5. Remove Garden Hoses

All garden hoses should be removed from outdoor faucets. As the temperature drops, the water inside can freeze and expand, which can cause damage to the pipes.

Once they’re removed (remember to drain them beforehand), store them in a garage or shed.
