Contemplating on freshening up your walls with a new coat of paint?

If you’re not careful or prepared this project can easily turn into a nightmare!

With a little bit of planning and some tips, this DIY project can be as easy as it may sound instead of one big fiasco.

But how do you make this a fun experience instead of a hassle?

Check out these 5 wall painting techniques to help you feel like a pro.

5 Wall Painting Techniques to Know

Painting can be messy and it’s easy to do something wrong. Here are 5 wall painting techniques to make it a smooth project.

Wait for dry weather

1. Wait for Dry Weather

If it’s humid the paint will take longer to dry and it might drip. Avoid painting on a rainy day when the weather is more humid. If the only choice is to paint when its humid don’t rush through it, take your time.

Prep your surfaces

2. Prep the Surface

This is one of the most important parts to give you a good foundation. Before painting make sure the surface is ready for paint. Fill every visible hole and crack and sand it down to even the surface. No matter how expensive your paint is it won’t hide a cracked surface.

Another part of prepping is cleaning any dirty surface. If you paint over dirty or oily surfaces the paint will not stick and can easily chip in the future.

Last but not least when prepping use high-end painter tape to put around the edges of your surface. Using good painter tape will seal out drips that might happen during painting. The last thing you want is removing your painter’s tape after you are done to find paint on your baseboard or ceiling.

High quality paint brushes

3. Use High-Quality Brushes and Rollers

This is not where you want to skimp because the last thing you want is your paintbrush bristles falling out as you paint. Good brushes and rollers will not fall apart and will give the coverage needed to not waste time and extra paint.

4. Avoid Lap Marks

In order to avoid lap marks AKA those ugly stripes from uneven layers of paint buildup maintain a wet edge. If the edge is wet as each roll overlaps the previous roll of wet paint. The key here is to not let the roller dry. During this process make sure you run the roller up and down the full height of the wall.

Paint from top to bottom

5. Paint from Top to Bottom

Apply the paint using your roller from the ceiling and work your way down. Keep your roller wet to make sure as you are painting downward you are getting even coverage. Someone with little to no experience in painting will have drips and spatters but a professional is able to paint right over their mistakes as they work down the wall.

Feeling a little overwhelmed? A handyman in the Sunshine Coast area might be another option to take a load off your shoulders.

If the area starts to dry as you are painting leave it alone don’t try to go over it because it will dry with marks and streaks which will not be an easy fix. If for some reason you have any paint runs when you are done once the paint is dry, use fine sandpaper to remove the rue and then retouch with a little paint and a brush.
