From Old to New: 6 Creative Ways to Modernize a Dated Apartment

For years, you have been thinking about sprucing up your apartment. However, remodeling and buying new furniture pieces can be expensive.

But being strapped for cash does not mean that you cannot do anything.

In this post, we have listed six creative ways on how you can modernize an old apartment.

Change Your Curtains

Curtains are one of the most affordable home decors that you can buy. However, you should consider the space where you will use the curtain.

A curtain that is best used in a bedroom is less likely to work in the living room. But there is something in common when it comes to a modern window treatment.

They are often white or neutral colored and made of light materials. That way, you can let air and sun in. Nonetheless, you can pair it with something dark-colored to block out the sun when needed.

Another way to make your window look modern is to replace the rods with something polished and sleek.

Replace Some Kitchen Hardware

When we say kitchen hardware, we mean the faucet, cabinet handles, and knobs.

For one, this hardware does not cost much. Second, replacing the kitchen faucet and knobs can make a massive difference in how your kitchen looks.

If you want a modern-looking kitchen, we suggest that you purchase a faucet with a polished chrome finish and sleek design. The same thing goes with cabinet handles and knobs.

Clean the Bathroom

The bathroom is often one of the shabby parts of an old apartment. It is not just because of the age but because refitting or renovating a bathroom can be costly.

Luckily, you can do something about your old bathroom to give it an updated look.

You can start by replacing the lighting fixtures, curtain rod, shower curtain, mirror, and faucet. If your budget is limited, go for function over form. For instance, a bathroom mirror cabinet is more practical as it adds storage space than a large, gold-framed mirror.

At Planet Maids Cleaning Services NYC, what we recommend is to make a homemade all-purpose bathroom cleaner.

In a 16 oz. spray bottle, pour in two cups of warm distilled water, 1 tbsp. baking soda and 2 tbsp. Castille soap. Shake the contents well before spraying it on your lavatory tub, toilet, tile, and tile. Let it sit for five minutes before wiping off with a damp cloth.

Change the Light Fixtures

The living room can be the largest area in your apartment. It is also one of the first spaces that guests will see and occupy. Hence, it only makes sense that you exert some effort in sprucing it up.

And one way to do that is to change the light fixtures.

Depending on the theme of your living room, you can opt for pendant lights or a chandelier. You can also purchase an overarching floor lamp and place it in one corner. Doing so allows you to have a reading nook in your living room.

Regardless, always opt for LED or CFL lights. That’s because this kind of lighting imitates daylight and does not make your electric bill skyrocket.

Patch Up the Floors

Another thing you can do in the living room is to patch up the floor.

If you have the time and money, you can replace the floor altogether. On the other hand, you can consider replacing the carpet instead. If your resources are sparse, an area rug will do.

What’s important is that your flooring can make your apartment look cohesive. Hence, you should consider the modern vibe flooring installation to achieve through your decors and flooring.

Repaint Your Walls

Another affordable yet excellent way to spruce up a dated apartment is to change the color of your walls.

Gone are the days when the preferred wall color and design are neutral and gaudy. These days, pastel color and a streamlined color scheme is the thing. But if your preferred color is on the dark side (e.g., royal blue or emerald greed), you can still make it happen by having an accent wall.

If you are renting your place, you can still update your wall color by replacing the wallpaper. What’s cool about it is that wallpapers nowadays come in colors and patterns to give your apartment an updated and modern look.

But whether you are using paint or wallpaper, ensure that it will not create any visual clutter. Otherwise, your outdated apartment will look messy.

Conclusion

As mentioned earlier, updating your apartment does not have to be costly. Sometimes, all it takes is creativity, cleaning, and organizing.

The home decorating tips listed above can come in handy if you have a limited budget or if you are renting. That’s because they do not cost much, and they are easily reversed when it is time to move out.

Which of these tips are you doing in your apartment? Let us know in the comments!
