What to Consider When Adding Roof Windows to Your Home Extension?

Adding roof windows to your home extension is an excellent way to improve its visual appeal while maximising the amount of light entering the interior. However, the process is not as straightforward as simply cutting a hole in your ceiling.

First of all, ask yourself whether you want to add these roof lights on your own or hire an architect to do it for you — both solutions have their advantages. Also, consider what size and style your roof windows should be. Other than that, determine the best direction your roof windows should be facing.

If you want to learn more about this complicated endeavour, you came to the right place. Here are a few things to keep in mind while installing roof windows in your home extension:

Do You Want to Add Them On Your Own or Hire an Architect?

Before doing anything else, you need to decide whether you want to add the roof windows on your own or hire a professional to do it for you. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages.

If you plan to opt for the former solution, remember that the process can be tricky and time-consuming. It is essential to take precise measurements and use the correct tools for the job. Furthermore, you must take into account the structural integrity of a building. For example, you might need to add some support pylons or beams before moving to other tasks.

If you are unsure about your skills, hiring a professional to get the job done could be the right decision. Such a move has several advantages.

First, architects are familiar with the building code. Thanks to it, they can ensure that your new windows are installed correctly and in line with the local regulations. Secondly, they could design the inclusion so the windows will complement the overall look of your home extension.

Experts also know which products and manufacturers to choose (for example, whether you should go for roof windows by OptiLight or some other provider) to guarantee durability and low maintenance. Thanks to their advice and experience, you can ensure that your roof windows will serve you for many years.

What Size and Style of Roof Windows Should You Choose?

The next thing you need to do is decide on the right size and style of roof windows for your home extension. Roof windows come in many different sizes, shapes, and colours. Moreover, they can be fixed or operable (opened and closed manually or automatically).

The size of the roof windows you need to go for depends on the amount of light you want to let into your home, as well as the overall look you are trying to achieve. Choose large windows if you want to maximise the amount of light. On the other hand, go for smaller ones if you want a more subtle look.

The style of the roof windows is also crucial. For example, fixed windows are a good choice if you want to let in lots of light but do not want the windows to be overly expensive. Conversely, operable windows are perfect if you want to control the ventilation in your home.

If the roof of your extension is really high, consider choosing remote-controlled windows so that you can open and close them without having to use a ladder.

What Direction Should the Roof Windows Be Facing?

Another vital consideration is the direction your roof windows should be facing. This factor ultimately depends on the climate in your area and the overall look you are going for.

If you live in a warm climate, it might be a good idea to install the windows on the south-facing side of the roof so that they can let in lots of natural light and heat during the winter months.

But, if you live in a cooler climate, installing windows on the north-facing side might be a better option. If facing this way, they can help keep your home cool during the summer months. Finally, if you love to rise early in the morning, east-facing windows might be the best choice for your needs.

Should You Go For Toughened Glass or Laminated Glass?

When choosing your roof windows, you might have to decide between toughened glass and laminated glass. Both types of glass possess unique qualities that might sway your decision one way or the other.

Toughened glass is a type of safety glass that is a few times stronger than regular glass. It is very transparent, so letting in a lot of sunlight should not be an issue. But, it is still prone to breaking. Because of that, this type of glass might not be the best choice for you if your region is known for hail or severe storms.

Laminated glass is another type of safety glass made by bonding several layers of glass together with a layer of plastic in between. It is very durable and shatterproof, so it is a good choice if you live in an area with extreme weather conditions. Regardless, it is not as clear as toughened glass. As a result, it might not let in as much sunlight as you would like.

Should You Add Motorised Roller Blinds?

Motorised roller blinds are an excellent way to control how much light and heat enters your home through the roof windows. You can operate them manually or automatically (e.g., with remote control).

If you add motorised roller blinds to your roof windows, get ones specifically designed for that purpose. Regular window blinds might not fit properly or fail to block out all of the light. On top of that, account that such motorised blinds can be expensive, so this might not be an option if you are working with a tight budget.

The Bottom Line

Adding roof windows to your home extension can be a challenging process. But, if you take the time to think about all the factors involved, you should find the perfect solution for your needs.

Remember to take into account the size and style of the windows. You should also decide if you want them to be fixed or operable. Moreover, think about the direction the windows should be facing. The climate in your area will play a role in this decision. Besides, choose the right type of glass and consider whether adding motorised roller blinds to your roof windows will be beneficial.
