How to Spice up a Plain White Wall – Home Decorating Ideas

When you decorate your home, a lot of time and effort goes into the placement of furniture, the lighting, and decorative accents. But sometimes, when you finish putting it all together, it can still feel as though something is missing.

Whether it’s the kitchen, the hallway, the living room, or your home office, you can end up with a blank wall that is just crying out for some attention. So, what can you do that won’t interfere with your overall design plan? We’ve put together a few suggestions that are sure to transform that humdrum wall.

Chalkboard

Create a Chalkboard Calendar

You’ve probably already heard of chalkboard paint and decided it’s only fit for a kid’s bedroom or playroom.

However, chalkboard paint has a wide range of applications. For example, why not invest in a couple of different shades of chalkboard paint to mark out the squares of a calendar on a wall in your office?

Instead of investing in a new calendar every year, a permanent space on the wall to mark down your appointments acts as a great visual reminder.

This would also be a great idea to have in the kitchen to remind you and your family of the activities on tap for each day. You can use a different chalk color for each member of your family.

Wall Decal

Invest in Some Wall Stickers

If you don’t have the time or the energy to go out and pick out more paint, why not peruse the extensive collection of wall stickers available online? From flowery designs to Disney characters and cityscapes, you’re bound to find something that will fit in with the overall feel of the room you want to decorate.

You can be as subtle or as over the top as you like with wall decals. Applying wall stickers requires just a bit of preparation, and they’re very easy to remove if you decide you want to change the design of the room.

Just make sure you wait at least two weeks before applying them to a freshly painted wall.

Create a Gallery Wall

Create a Meaningful Gallery Wall

Rather than deciding that a few generic canvases from your local home depot store will do the trick, put some thought into what else you could hang on your wall.

A personalized wall could contain all sorts of different items, like your own artwork, special photographs, a map of your favorite vacation destination, and any awards or certificates that you’ve received.

Rather than thumbtacking them to the wall, invest in some good quality certificate frames from a custom framing company such as Church Hill Classics. With a protective frame, you’ll be able create a personalized collage and add extra mementos, such as playbills, medallions, ribbons, or tickets from a memorable event.

Whatever pieces you choose, make sure you mark out a plan in pencil on the wall beforehand so that everything fits nicely.

Hang Fabric on Your Walls

Utilize Your Favorite Fabric

If there is still too much white for your liking and you just need to add some color, why not consider using fabric? Although there are plenty of wallpaper designs to choose from, you won’t find the diversity of colors and patterns that you’ll find at the fabric store.

Alternatively, if you have some leftover fabric from a DIY upholstery project, it’s time to put it to good use. To hang fabric on a wall, you’ll need a staple gun, scissors, and some finishing nails. Or, you can go for a completely different look by gluing fabric to a plain white door.

Being one of the first in your circle of friends to hang fabric rather than wallpaper is sure to be a great talking point.

Shelving

Add Shelving

Many blank walls can also be used for extra storage and organization. With so many shelving options available to you, from floating shelves to step-ladder shelving, you can turn your plain white wall into a functional space.

Why not fill the shelves with objects and artwork you’ve collected, or even turn the shelves into a customized wine rack? Shelving in a home office can be used to hold stationery or reference books, while shelves in a bathroom can be used to organize towels.

If you’re struggling for furniture space in the bedroom, a shelf can be a perfect place to house a television or a few houseplants.

If you’ve been itching to find a way to break up a blank space in your home, try some of these ideas or simply use them as inspiration!
